Information about this lot:
This bronze sculpture
is a portrait of Gala that evidences the trend of Dali of stylistically
imitate other artists, making his own style may be defined as a
"pastiche".
Thematically, Dalí
was noted for his surreal creativity, especially in their dream based paintings
where the technical aspect, in the beginning, resembled not to be at all
innovative, but after being inspired by the avant-garde artists -mostly Picasso
and Miró- in the twenties, he supported on the mostly academic painting that he
complimented with his obsessive love for the detail.
In sculpture, even he
worked the assembly in the spirit of Dada and Surrealism, also he frequently
adopted, modelling in wax and later cast in bronze based on the expressionism
inherited from Rodin that is defined on a very bumpy texture in which the
drafting process leaves its traces, although the overall composition becomes
into the purity of classical Greek art.
Here's Gala performed
almost covered by a vast drape in a pose encoded by that tradition, to which
reference is made explicit in the missing arm reminiscent of the famous "Venus
de Milo". For Dalí, no woman but Gala could impersonate the goddess of
love.
